A handsome vintage large solid English sterling silver wine coaster / slide made by the top-notch London silversmith, Wakley and Wheeler Ltd of Hatton Garden; made for the top notch silver retailer's Asprey of Bond Street, London. The potbelly shaped coaster is fully hallmarked for London 1989 together with the makers mark for Wakley and Wheeler Ltd. and signed, "Asprey London". The base is made from solid wood and protected on the underside with green baize. A good size measuring 5" in diameter x 2" and weighing 209 Grams / 6.72 Troy Ounces (including base). It comes complete with the original Asprey and Garrard gift box measuring 9 3/8" x 6 3/4" x 2". Excellent condition, looks to be unused. Wakely & Wheeler A London silversmith firm whose origins go back to 1791, when John Lias began in business as a buckle maker. In 1818, he took as his partner, his son, Henry Lias I, and they were joined from 1823 to 1837 by another son, Charles. Henry Lias I and his son, Henry Lias II, were partners from 1850. In 1879, Henry Lias II formed a firm with James Wakely. In 1884, the firm consisted of James Wakely and Frank Wheeler, becoming Wakely & Wheeler in 1909.
