Description

The Scottish town of Mauchline in the nineteenth century was a hive of activity creating any number of small fancy wooden treasures to be sold as souvenirs and gifts.
The factories were also engaged in making these highly popular pieces for the continental markets, this one for the German market for domestic gift-giving or as a gift purchased by the British on their Grand Tour of Europe and the world.
The box is covered in the ever-popular Stuart tartan, retaining it's original little gold on black label.
The centre of the lid is an absolute joy, one couldn't wish for a more charming decoupaged panel. The is a floral and foliate border with a Cherub or Putti Figure shooting an arrow, the words say "Herzlichen Glückwunsch Zum Geburtstage" which I believe to translate as "Many happy returns"; so produced as a Birthday gift or new baby's gift.
The underside retains it's original blue paper covering. The box remains in superb condition with a good glossy patina. 6 1/8" x 5" x 2 1/8".
