Description

A simply wonderful example of a stationery cabinet or writing box made from exotic and expensive Rosewood, with it's exquisite grain and colourings.
Both the top and front are decorated with the intricate inlay made from Satinwood, Harewood and Ivory. Each side of the cabinet has a heavy cast brass carrying handle.
The lid opens to reveal a fall-front which in turn opens again to reveal a gold-embossed leather covered writing slope. The original leather is pristine, almost looking unused.
The box has various compartments to keep stationery and the interior of the lid also has green coloured leather which houses an old propelling pencil, which came with the box and I have left intact .. it doesn't have any lead in, there is also space for a couple of other pens/pencils and perhaps a paper knife. The leather here is lucky enough to have a gold embossed Registration number (178232) which allows us to date this piece being registered in 1891, a true Victorian gem.
There is a brass topped glass inkwell and two drawers below. The metal fittings to the front would have housed paper calendar cards, this could now be used to store paper note pads or something similar.
A stunning box in superb condition, complete with working key. 13 1/4" x 6 1/2" deep x 9 3/4" tall while closed up.
