Description
Probably the finest quality leather writing box we have had, kept in magnificent condition thanks to the original lined leather protector, reserved only for the very finest of boxes.
There are two signatures, one gold embossed on the leather and engraved into the lock. The maker is the top notch Jenner & Knewstub. Established in 1856 by Frederick Jenner and Fabian James Knewstub, they were established at 33 St. James St. and then later in 1862 at 66 Jermyn St. London. Their work was exhibited at the International Exhibition of 1862 and the Paris Exhibition of 1878; they quickly obtained many Royal Warrants including those to the Russian Royal Family and Queen Victoria. I would expect this box to date to 1860 as the address is the 33 St. James St. one.
The box retains it's original Bramah (creme de la creme of locksmith's) lock with the original key. The top has a fine quality flush brass handle engraved with the original owners name "Charles Hagart". I am uncertain but this could possibly have been Colonel Charles Hagart, the date of his travels to India fit in perfectly with this box and would account for the protector.
The interior of the lid has a large portfolio which comes out and there is a note board behind. The box also has a blotter with original blotting paper. There is a top quality campaign style travel inkwell and a matching "Light" or vesta with a Go-To-Bed match holder.
Fine, fine quality and in excellent condition. The writing box measures 16" x 11" x 6".
