Description

A rare find, this Victorian Tunbridge Ware writing box or lap desk has one of the most sought-after scenes to the lid, of the very famous Eton College, founded in 1440 by King Henry VI.
The shaped box opens to reveal a writing slope, with a gold embossed decoration. The paper lining is original apart from the hand-marbled paper added to the bottom of the removable tray and the bottom of the box, where I assume it was tatty and unsightly. The internal tray has a slight warp to it. The interior retains the original Tunbridge lidded compartment and the original inkwell with a Rosewood and Tunbridge screw top.
A splendid box in excellent condition having been professionally re-polished, stabilising the old grain cracks that can be seen on the lid. 9 3/4" x 7 3/8" x 2 1/2" tall while closed.
Tunbridge Ware: Originating in the Georgian town of Tunbridge Wells, Kent, visitors began buying wooden souvenirs from the woodworkers of surrounding areas such as Tonbrige and Speldhurst.
During the 1830's James Burrows developed the tessellated mosaic technique which became the most well known type of Tunbridge Ware.
