A really wonderful and unusual string box, dating to the late Victorian period, around 1890. The box is made from cut glass and the fittings from a nickel or silver-plated metal. The lid has a bayonet type fitting which keeps the lid in place when closed up. The box looks fabulous with a full ball of string or even better, a coloured twine of some type; and would look equally good on a desk-top or in the kitchen. There is a hole where the string is dispensed and the original cutter crowns the top. The cutter retains the original blade which really would be too blunt to cut thick sting today. Most unusual and in excellent condition, the foot has a diameter measures 3 1/2" in diameter x 5" tall to top of cutter.
