Description
Pretty as a picture, a quite stunning skillfully painted wooden tea caddy with the base wood also having been painted over with decorative "graining".Continental in origin, French, German or possibly Dutch and dating to around 1850, the top has the most exquisite oval hand painted rural scene.
There are floral garlands to the sides of the lids and even the cross-banding at the base of the caddy is all hand painted.
Once the lid is opened, the interior is just impressive with the two compartments having solid Mahogany lids, beautifully painted.
A most unusual feature, which I have not seen before is a second set of lids which fit into the interior of each compartment, presumably to keep the leaf tea confined and even fresher than a single lid.
A magnificent and highly decorative box, in excellent condition with a natural grain crack to one side, mentioned purely for accuracy. 8 1/2" x 4 3/4" x 4 3/4" tall.
