Description
A truly exquisite and rare antique inkstand / desk set made in France around 1830. Made from fine polished brass, it has pink enamel and Mother of Pearl worked into the brass in a boulle manner. This process first developed by the French cabinetmaker, André-Charles Boulle (11 November 1642 – 28 February 1732, highly popular in nineteenth century Britain.
The wood used in exotic Rosewood with the interior lined in Kingwood. The box has a drawer to the underside and opens to in the centre to reveal a pen tray one side and a lidded compartment the other flanked either side by crystal inkwells with corked silver plated tops, with an engraved decoration; they fit perfectly and appear to be original to the box.
The box is carried by a beautifully cast and polished brass handle.
The form is unusual and the colour highly prized and a rare fine; and in exquisite condition; a really rare and fine desk-top gem.
