Description

A absolutely spectacular set of boxes originally used to hold games counters and originates from the Belgium town of Spa where wealthy and fashionable visitors on their Grand Tour would have purchased these wares as souvenirs.
What is nice about this particular example is that it features scenes of the town of Spa, "Lentree de Spa" on the front and a variety of various scenes on the smaller counter boxes; all beautifully painted.
Dating to around 1800, the box remains in excellent condition; a couple of the smaller boxes have a little warping to the lids (see photos) and there has perhaps been a touch up to the painting on the front; mentioned purely for accuracy.
A spectacular set of boxes, each one a work of art. The outer box measures 8" x 6" x 2" and the four counter boxes measure 3 1/2" x 2 1/2" x 1 1/2".
