Description
A grand and exquisite lap desk or writing slope, English in origin and made from Papier Mache with a lovely domed lid to the integral stationery compartment.
The lavishly gilded and polychrome lacquer is enhanced with three wonderful hand-painted panels of dogs. There is usual age crazing to the lacquer on slope section, commensurate with age.
The lock is to the right hand side and has a carved Mother of Pearl escutcheon and comes with a working key. The domed lid lifts to reveal a fitted stationery section with a removable pen tray flanked by two wonderful original period brass topped inkwells each marked Patent London on the top. A couple of tiny nibbles to the glass, nothing of consequence.
The flap folds down to reveal a leather writing surface. The top section of the slope opens to reveal a large storage section below for papers, letters etc.
Victorian in era, dating to c.1850, it remains in superb condition. 14 1/2" x 11 1/2" x 6" tall to top of dome.
