Description

A truly fine late Victorian desk-top stationery or writing box in Boulle by the finest of manufacturers and retailers, Leuchars of Piccadilly, London.
The shell was attached to the hardwood frame with coloured matter below (in this case red) to give this highly sought after reddish-orange colouring to these works of art. This process first developed by the French cabinetmaker, André-Charles Boulle (11 November 1642 – 28 February 1732, highly popular in nineteenth century Britain.
The boulle in this example is the finest with intricate cut brass inlaid into the tortoiseshell. The box opens to reveal the all-original leather lined fitted interior. The centre of the domed lid retains the original regal-looking monogram of the original owner.
The underside also retains the original leather with the gold embossed signature for the very famous London retailer, Leuchars of Piccadilly, makers to the Royal family and winning prizes in the Great Exhibition of 1851 and the International Exhibition of 1862, winning a further silver medal at the International Exposition of 1867 in Paris.
William Jr finally agreed to sell the business, along with their Sherwood Street manufactory, to Asprey in 1888. Leuchars continued to trade from their 38 & 39 Piccadilly address until 1902.
As good as they get and in superb professionally cleaned condition. A few minuscule fine bruises to smooth brass plinth, insignificant but mentioned for accuracy. 10 3/4" x 6 1/2" x 7 1/2" tall to top at rear.
