Description
A top quality desk set made from highly decorative Boulle, cut brass inlaid into the Tortoiseshell and mounted onto a wooden base.
The Tortoiseshell was attached to the hardwood frame with coloured matter below (in this case red) to give this highly sought after reddish-orange colouring to these works of art. This process first developed by the French cabinetmaker, André-Charles Boulle (11 November 1642 – 28 February 1732, highly popular in nineteenth century Britain into the very early 20th century.
The front incorporates a pen dish and behind is a lidded compartment for pen nibs and other small desk necessities. Both the fabulous cut crystal inkwells are intact in lovely condition (one minor old professional repair to one corner of the wood - insignificant but mentioned purely for accuracy).
As good as they get and in superb professionally polished condition dating to c.1900. 12" x 8 3/4" x 5"; each inkwell measuring 2" x 2" x 2 5/8".
