Description

A rare and highly sought-after example of a Victorian salad bowl made from solid English Oak and silver plated fittings.
A large and heavy example the shaped bowl has been turned and decorated with a band of fine quality filigree around the outside. Of course the stars are the two figural Bull handles and the four hoof legs.
The underside has a shield shaped mount bearing the makers mark J & Co. for Johnson and Co. of Birmingham.
The rim around the top of the salad bowl retains the original dated inscription "Won By J Coullish 3 Miles Handicap 1st Prize 1888", making this an example of interest to Cycling enthusiasts.
The original creamware liner is intact in superb condition with minor crazing to the glaze on the underside. The bowl comes complete with a pair of salad servers in Oak and silverplate, with the bowls of the utensils washed in gold.
An outstanding and impressive piece, measuring 14" handle to handle x 10 1/2" x 7" tall.
