Description

A beautiful set of mid-Victorian English fish eaters in English sterling silver.
All the pieces are pierced or reticulated and engraved with a variety of patterns incorporated a variety of fish. The handles are in the classic English "King's Pattern".
Each of the pieces has a small regal pair of heraldic family crests.
All the pieces are fully hallmarked, the knives for 1865 and the forks from 1865 to 1873; this is not a fault; the pieces were all hallmarked at the assay office at the time of manufacture and they stored and used as sets were sold, sometimes having a mixture of date letters. The knives were made by Francis Higgins II and the forks are marked FH gothic into a heart for The Portland Co Ltd - Francis Higgins III - The firm was founded by Harry Emanuel, retailer goldsmith of Hanover Square, to capitalise a patent for the machine-production of spoons and forks. Francis Higgins acted as manager from 1859 to 1868.
The set comes in a presentation box retailed by Nathan and Company in Birmingham.
The case measures 14 3/4" x 11" x 1 1/4". The knife measures 8 3/4" in length and the fork, 7 1/2". The combined weight is 22.38 Troy Ounces / 697.2 Grams.
