Description
An absolutely stunning writing / stationery cabinet made from Papier Mache and smothered with Mother of Pearl or Nacre shell inlay.
The front has a bow-front with a central hand-painted panel featuring a spring scene of flowers and a birds nest with eggs.
There is a working lock with key at the side which once unlocked, allows the front to be opened to reveal a writing slope with the original leather writing surface (wear commensurate with age) surrounded by a gilded Greek key design.
The side has a drawer the width of the cabinet for storing papers etc., which has been professionally re-lined in navy velvet so would also be suitable for jewelry or watches etc.
The box interior is fully fitted to accommodate, stationery, letters, photographs etc. Below is a shaped integral pen tray and to the right of this a period inkwell with gilded lid.
Dating to c.1880, Victorian in era, it remains in superb antique condition. 13" wide x 9 3/4" deep x 12 3/4" tall at the rear of the cabinet.
