Description

An outstanding Victorian Jewellery box made from stunning and highly decorative Walnut with it's beautiful figuring and rich tapestry of colours.
The box is mounted with highly polished brass strapping and central mounts to both top and front. There are three Italian Pietra Dura insets, one large one on the top and two smaller ones to the front of the box.
Pietra Dura or Pietre Dura is a term for the technique of using cut and fitted, highly-polished colored stones to create images. It is considered a decorative art. The stonework, after the work is assembled loosely, is glued stone-by-stone to a substrate after having previously been "sliced and cut in different shape sections; and then assembled together so precisely that the contact between each section was practically invisible".
The interior of the box has been professionally re-lined, beautifully executed to create a lovely clean finish ready to use with the top divider sliding along to create customized compartment sizes.
The box retains it's original engraved brass makers plaque "Bedford 67 Regent St", a London Watchmaker and Jeweller.
The box dating to around 1860 is in superb condition measuring 10" x 7" x 5 1/4".
