Description

A truly smart and highly sought-after Art Deco silver cigarette box by the top-notch silversmith, "Goldsmiths and Silversmiths Co.".
Originally a cigarette box lined in Cedar wood, it would accommodate a smaller cigar width wise, with the interior measuring 5 1/4" wide; one small grain crack to the cedar in the top left hand corner (insignificant but mentioned for accuracy). The box could easily be used as a desk tidy or jewelry box; the look is exactly what our clients are currently looking for.
The box is made from English sterling silver with a smooth finish in the centre and two raised bands either side, beautifully engine-turned.
The box is fully hallmarked for Birmingham 193.2. The underside is signed by the eminent Yorkshire retailer, Ogdens of Harrogate. This box being made 5 years before the Imperial State Crown, part of the Crown Jewels, commissioned by Ogdens in their workshops in 1937 to celebrate the coronation of King George VI. Also worn at this coronation was Empress Josephine's tiara, remodelled in Ogden of Harrogate's workshops.
Excellent condition, measuring 5 1/2" x 3 1/2" x 2" tall; a good weighty box weighing 17.53 Troy Ounces / 552.5 Grams.
