A rare example of a late Victorian figural inkwell in the form of a charming Tortoise / Turtle figure on a naturalistic base.
Beautifully cast in brass retaining the original gilding with a fabulous patination. The lid of the inkwell is kept securely shut and is opened by pressing the head down to release the top. The interior reveals the bright gilding and a removable ceramic ink chamber.
English in origin and dating to the late Victorian era, c.1880. 5 1/2" max 3 3/4" x 2 3/4" tall.
