Description

This is an excellent original example of the Verners Patenet MK VIII. It is fully functioning, has a brass case and is mounted with lanyard ring. The glass face and numbered brass outer ring are perfectly intact. The lid is signed by the London maker, " J H Steward Ltd. Strand, London".
The optician, James Henry Steward, founded his business in 1852 and produced an extensive range of items for military use advertised as instruments for �Reconnoitring, Sketching, Night Marching, Signally, Gun Laying�.
In the middle of the 19th century the business was appointed as the optician to Her Majesty's British & Foreign Governments, the National Rifle Associations of England, India, Canada & the Colonies and the National Artillery Association.
It is complete with brown leather case (wear commensurate with age and use) with hinged top and buckle fastener. A great clean example in excellent condition. 3 1/2" x 2 1/4" x 7/8" thick. The case measuring 4" x 3" x 2".
