Description
A very fine and unusual example of Victorian postal / letter scale dating to c.1890 and made by the top-notch maker, Sampson Mordan & Co. of London; signed across the balance.The base is what makes this an unusual example veneered with three types of timber, Amboyna to the top, burl Ash to the cantered edge and Rosewood to the base.
The brass fittings have been professionally polished together with the complete set of weights including the small topper which is often missing.
The letter pan is engraved with all the postal rates of the day; we are therefore able to date this example between 1885 and 1897.
Excellent condition measuring 9 1/4" x 5 1/8" x 4".
