Description
A fabulous antique English Crocodile / Alligator skin jewellery box having a wonderful glossy patina in a deep cognac colour.The top has a long brass mount which could be personalised by a silversmith for presentation if required.
The polished brass escutcheon to the front is a press-button style, requiring pushing to open the box, coming complete with the working key.
The box opens to reveal a fully fitted interior in a deep mustard silk and velvet, the fall front reveals the two cantilevered trays.
The underside of the box is signed in gold embossing "John Pound & Co. Ltd, London".
John Pound is the oldest luggage brand in the world. Starting life in the City of London in 1823 making trunks and luggage for the gentry from its base in Leadenhall Street, the brand pre-dates all other luggage houses.
Sir John Pound was the son of the founder, taking over the business in the 1860s. By 1871 the company was one of the biggest of its kind in the UK, and operated from 3 factories and had stores all across central London.
