Description
A very fine and unusual example of an English sterling silver cigar box. What makes this a highly prized example is the accoutrements that come alongside box.
The central handle is where two sterling silver cigar cutters sit and one side of the handle is a removable vesta case / match striker; the other side has a removable cigar spirit lighter. All of these pieces including the box are fully hallmarked for London 1898 together with the makers mark for JB into an oval for Joseph Braham, active 1875-1920 at 3 Pulteney Street, Golden Square, Soho later Rupert Street, Leicester Square and Gerrard Street, Soho - London.
The box has two hinged compartments for cigars, lined in cedar wood, the original "humidor", this wood keeping the contents fresh. Each compartment internally has a width measuring 5 7/8".
The top of one side has a very grand family / armorial crest engraved with the motto Auxilium Ab Alto, meaning help from above.
A superb and highly desirable box measuring 9 1/4" x 6 3/4" x 5 1/4" to top of cigar cutter.
