Description

An absolute stunner of a writing box for the discerning, wanting a grand piece with presence. Made from solid Mahogany the exterior is inlaid to the top and front with fan inlay and boxwood stringing. Either side is fitted with a thick solid cast brass carrying handle, complimenting the brass escutcheon to the front, which comes with a working key. All the brass fittings: drawer handles, lock, piano hinges and the like have all been professionally re-polished to gleam.
The lid lifts to reveal a leather lined interior fitted with one bone and one Ivory paper knives. The double action front comes down which also releases the sprung inkwell and pen compartments, automatically coming out when the front comes down and automatically pushed back when this front is returned. The wood here too is beautifully inlaid.
This section again opens to reveal a very large original leather writing slope with stunning gold tooling. The top section opens once again with a good storage compartment for storage of letters, papers and stationery.
The main compartment of the box is superbly fitted with a Mahogany divided stationery rack, due to the large size of this piece, all these compartments are very usable. To the front of this is a polished brass holder for calendar cards, these have been professionally re-created, one set being perpetual. This brass plate is engraved to the front with the initials S C & A C and the date 1902, this must have been a presentation piece for a Wedding or Anniversary. Below this are three drawers with beautifully cast brass pulls.
To each side of the stationery rack, the box retains it's two original Mahogany framed slates for notes and memos and the four original red leather bound books: Visits & Addresses; Memorandum; Personal Expenses and Cash Book - a few early entries into each but mostly untouched.
There are two brass topped glass inkwells, one with a lift off lid and the other with a screw top lid.
Quite spectacular in every way, complete and in magnificent condition; a true heirloom example. Measuring a mammoth 16" x 10" x 13 1/2" tall while closed. Please also note that our FREE worldwide shipping still applies to this piece, a huge saving for an imposing piece.
