Description

A rare if not unique antique English Letter box in the form of a longcase clock.
Made from Mahogany, it is beautifully inlaid to the front; above the door at the front is the working little "Letters" plate. Boxes such as these were would have been seen in the finest of homes for the mailing of little letters which would have been collected daily by a member of the household staff and taken either to the Post Office or hand delivered.
The letters would have been small sized, typical of the Victorian and Edwardian period, hence the small size of the letter plate. The letters would have been emptied via the door to the front which retains it's working key.
The clock has a white enamel face and is marked "Made In France" and is in working order and has it's key which hangs on a hook on the inside of the rear door. The clock is not affixed and care should be taken not to push it out when winding!
Dating to the Edwardian era, around 1910, it remains in superb condition. 7 1/4" wide x 4" deep x 22 1/2" tall.
