A superb and very handsome pair of the unusual and sought-after "Alert" binoculars by Lawrence and Mayo, dating to c.1910. These English pocket sized Field glasses or binoculars are made from brass having been meticulously professionally re-polished to gleam.
I have had many similar pairs by Lawrence and Mayo, all of the others have been named the "Lynx", this is the first pair I have come across (a slightly different model) named the the "Alert"
They come with the integral compass, signed by the maker's Lawrence & Mayo (of London) and "The Alert". Each lens has a sunshade that pulls out in bright and sunny conditions.
The paper instructions on the back of the compass cover are intact, nine times out of ten, these have gone.
A beautiful pair in superb condition and measuring 4 3/8" wide x 1 3/4" deep; expanding from 3" to 4 1/4" when fully opened and sun shields in operation.
