magnificent antique english inlaid rosewood writing box stationery cabinet

Description

A simply wonderful example, with the most exquisite inlay, the first I have had with this design of inlay the front featuring the most exquisite urn filled with tulips and foliage.
The box is made from Mahogany and finished on the front and top with exotic and expensive Rosewood, with it's exquisite grain and colourings.
Both the top and front are decorated with the intricate inlay made from Satinwood, Harewood and Ivory. Each side of the cabinet has a heavy cast brass carrying handle.
The lid lifts up and the front falls down, when the front comes down the sprung compartment comes out which houses the brass topped inkwell and removable pen tray/rest. Once the front is closed this compartment moves back under the stationery compartments.
The fall-front in turn opens again to reveal a gold-embossed leather covered writing slope, the top half lifts to reveal a large compartment for letters and stationery. The back compartment also houses the original leather desk blotter, which can be seen in one of the photographs.
The top section has various compartments to keep stationery and the interior of the lid also have Burgundy coloured leather which houses an Ivory paper knife or page turner there is also space for a couple of pens/pencils. The leather here is lucky enough to have a gold embossed Registration number (173369) which allows us to date this piece being registered in 1891, a true Victorian gem.
There are printed cards to the front acting as a perpetual calendar with year cards having been made for 2010-2014.
A stunning box in superb condition, complete with working key. 13 1/4" x 6 1/2" deep x 9 3/4" tall while closed up.
