Le Must de Cartier Vendôme Letter Opener is a highly collectable vintage 1980s desk accessory. It perfectly translates the design language of Cartier’s luxury watchmaking into an elegant office object. This example is signed on the terminal and marked "Made In France" together with the unique serial number 004252 which dates this to the early 1980's.
This is a "new old stock" example, unused, complete in it's iconic red presentation case and the cardboard outer sleeve containing the paper product catalogue for the range.
The vintage Must de Cartier Vendôme Godron letter opener features the following standard dimensions in inches: Total Length: 7.5 inches (approx. 19 cm to 19.2 cm) Blade Width: 5/8 inch at its widest point right below the handle, tapering down to the tip. Thickness: Approx. 1/2 inch at the thickest part of the ribbed gold handle below the handle weighs roughly 116 to 117 grams (~4.1 ounces), giving it a very solid, balanced, and luxurious weight when held in the hand.
The Cartier brand was founded in Paris in 1847 when master jeweller Louis-François Cartier took over his master’s workshop. The business grew steadily, gaining the patronage of the French imperial court (notably Empress Eugénie). In 1899, Louis-François’s son, Alfred, moved the boutique to the prestigious Rue de la Paix, establishing the brand at the absolute epicentre of global luxury and fashion.
