A truly magnificent and very handsome hand-carved figural / novelty inkwell in the form of a dog, beautifully executed, this is a lovely quality example, the type we are always happy to find. On the underside you can see the little carved-out square, this is where the wood would have been attached to a pole while being carved and plugged by the artist on completion. The carving is sharp and intricate including a little bow around his neck and the lovely board around his neck with pegs to hold two pens. (pen for photographic purposes only). The hinged lid lifts to reveal a removable glass ink chamber. The front leg out flat looks to have been repaired, this is always the the vulnerable area, the carving is not quite as intricate here. There are two lovely expressive glass eyes intact. Lovely condition dating to c.1890. An impressive size measuring 10 1/4" x 4 1/4" x 7" tall.
